The biggest thing that helped me is just practicing. Draw a lot to find out what technique works best for you. You will also discover which types of paper, graphite, pastels etc works best for your particular style.

You're welcome. There's another thing which might sound silly. Teach yourself to draw what you see. In other words really look at your subject. It's very rare that something has the same hues, values and color. There's always reflections or shadows on an object.
